The Good Ole Oil Debate - Our Opinion
While in 2025 we will agree countless companies make good synthetic engine oil, however we do think a few stand above the rest.
Liqui Moly
This engine oil has been trust by European enthusiasts for decades, newer editions are extremely high quality oil, however Liqui Moly is know for being slightly "thin" at the same viscosity then other brands at that exact viscosity. This is not a bad thing, thin oil aids to get oil to hard to reach area's of the engine upon start up. Overall? If our oil preference isn't available? We turn to Liqui Moly.
Motul
Motul has been leading the market for over 170 years in mechanical lubricants. Motul was the first company to introduce a multi-grade oil (aka 5w40) and the first company to combine natural petroleum oil and synthetics. Motul has been leading the market for a very long time.
Motul Power 5w40 is our choice of engine oil, whether on the track or spirited summer night drives. Motul Power offers significant LSPI protection as well, and is specifically made for street and track use.
At the core of this oil is its Ester base. Ester is what sets Motul apart from the competitors.
What is Ester and why is it so important?
Ester is proprietary blend of synthetics added to oil, the Ester is known as the Ester Core when added to oil. The Ester Core binds to metal, reducing friction on cold starts and in extreme conditions, temperature and high load. This is where the Ester Core system shines, on the track where oil starts to break down, the Ester Core gives it a longer and higher temperature range at the same viscosity.
Some Motul oils like 300V have so much Ester in the oil (300V is track dedicated oil) that they require 500 mile service intervals. However during track time this oil protects like nothing else.
We suggest all our tuned customers use Motul Power 5w40 in summer (or year round if in a hot climate) and 0w40 during the the winter. As Power does NOT come in 0w40, we use Liqui Moly for its thinner profile given our Canadian winters reach -30 degrees Celsius!
