Cometic HP multi-layer steel cylinder head gasket for the 1.6 litre Gamma II turbo, 78 mm bore, 0.024 in thick. A stainless multi-layer gasket with embossed sealing beads, built to hold a head clamp that a factory gasket was never asked to hold.
Why you would fit one. The factory gasket is the usual limit on a tuned 1.6 turbo. Push boost and cylinder pressure past stock and the head lifts fractionally at the hottest cylinder, the fire ring loses its seal and you get coolant loss, a misfire under load, or combustion gas in the cooling system. A multi-layer steel gasket rebuilds the seal with spring-steel beads that follow that movement instead of being crushed by it.
0.024 in is a thin gasket, and that is deliberate. It is about the thickness of a standard gasket rather than a raising shim, so it does not drop your compression ratio. That makes it the right choice when you are rebuilding a healthy engine for more boost. If you are running forged pistons and want compression taken out of the engine, you want a thicker gasket instead — ask us and we will quote one.
Fitment. Cometic publish this gasket for the 1.6 litre Gamma II turbo (G4FJ). On the cars we sell that is the Veloster Turbo and Veloster Turbo R-Spec, the Elantra GT Sport, and the Kia Forte Koup SX and Forte5 SX. Tell us your year and we will confirm it against Cometic's own application list before it ships — the 1.6 appears in several states of tune and not all of them are this engine.
This is a bored-block gasket size. 78 mm is the gasket bore, slightly larger than a standard 77 mm cylinder, which is normal and gives the fire ring room to seal. It suits a standard bore and a light overbore alike.
Head bolts are not reusable. The factory head bolts are torque-to-yield: they stretch permanently when first tightened and must not be re-used on a rebuild. Budget for a new bolt set, or head studs, with this gasket. We would rather tell you now than have the job come apart later.
Details: one cylinder head gasket; Cometic HP multi-layer stainless steel; 78 mm bore; 0.024 in (0.61 mm) compressed thickness; Cometic's application data lists it as a three-layer gasket with a valve-pocketed bore shape.
Surface finish matters more than the gasket. A multi-layer steel gasket needs a smoother deck and head face than a composite one. If the head is coming off anyway, have both faces checked for flatness and finish while it is apart.
