Fits: 2021-onward Hyundai Elantra N Line and Kona N Line with the 1.6T Smartstream engine, and the Kia 1.6T Smartstream variants. This is the Smartstream coil. For the 2.0T N cars and the older 1.6T engines, see the LR3 High Performance Ignition Coil Pack.
What this is
A high-performance, high-efficiency ignition coil for the 1.6T Smartstream engine, developed in Canada by N75 Motorsports. LR3-SS uses the same technology as our N-series LR3 coils: the spring makes full contact with the plug tip and the coil is low-resistance, so it needs less voltage to fire the plug and gives a stronger spark and more efficient combustion than the OEM coils.
Sold as a set of four coils, with a black or red top. The coils bolt in at the factory location in place of the OEM coils. See the reviews on this page.
The current batch of Red Top coils has the N75 logo printed upside down on the coil top; the coils meet our specification in every other way. Black coils are not affected.

Why the spring matters
On a direct-fire coil, the spring inside the roughly 6-inch boot does the job of a traditional spark-plug wire: the coil sits on top of the valve cover, and the spring carries its output down the boot to the plug tip. Any added resistance there weakens the coil, whatever coil is used.
The OEM coils leave a gap between the spring and the plug tip, so the spark has to arc from the spring to the plug. LR3-SS springs sit flush with the boot: full contact with the plug tip, plus a small amount of pressure, which reduces the resistance between plug and coil. The coil itself is low-resistance, which also aids spark energy.
Hyundai, like most manufacturers, uses shorter springs and relies on the arc, for easy factory installation and easy plug inspection at service. At stock power that works; under high power, ignition break-up can happen, and that is where LR3-SS steps in.

Installation
Installation on Smartstream engines needs patience. The spring must be sitting on the tip of the plug before you compress it, so follow the steps below exactly. A coil installed with the spring off the plug tip misfires immediately, and poorly installed coils are not covered under warranty.
- Line up the spring with the tip of the plug. You feel a small bounce when it is lined up.
- Push straight down on the coil top with your dominant hand, square to the valve cover, without letting the coil move side to side.
- Tighten the 10 mm bolt with your other hand while holding the coil down.
The boot seals on top of the valve cover rather than wrapping around it; the seal is watertight. Pushing the coil down at an angle can collapse the spring; a collapsed spring is not covered under warranty. If it happens, email sales@n75motorsports.ca. Installation takes care but is worth it.

Warranty
3-year warranty to the original buyer. Coils are a wear item, like spark plugs with a slightly longer service interval, and the 3-year warranty still applies. A spring collapsed by improper installation, or a coil installed with the spring off the plug tip, is not covered; email sales@n75motorsports.ca if it happens.
FAQ
Will these fit my 2.0T N or my older 1.6T?
No. LR3-SS is the coil for the 1.6T Smartstream engine. For the 2.0T N cars and the older 1.6T engines, see the LR3 High Performance Ignition Coil Pack.
Why is the logo upside down?
The current batch of Red Top coils has the N75 logo printed upside down on the coil top. It is a print error; the coils meet our specification in every other way. Black coils are not affected.
Do I need to replace all four?
LR3-SS is sold as a set of four coils.
What if I collapse a spring or the coil misfires after installation?
The spring must be sitting on the tip of the plug before the coil is pushed down; a coil installed with the spring off the plug tip misfires immediately, so check the spring and follow the installation steps exactly. A collapsed spring or a poorly installed coil is not covered under warranty. Email sales@n75motorsports.ca if it happens.
