It works on the downstream (rear) oxygen sensor, which monitors the catalyst rather than controlling fuelling, so spacing it out does not change how the engine runs. It removes the check engine light without compromising engine performance.
How it works
The rear oxygen sensor sits after the catalytic converter and watches how well the cat is working. With a high-flow cat, or with the cat removed, that sensor can read a signal the ECU treats as a failed catalyst, and it sets the P0420 code.
The fouler threads in line with that sensor and holds the sensor tip out of the main exhaust stream. The nozzle insert you fit further reduces the exhaust gas reaching the tip, so the catalyst monitor reads a clean signal and the code does not set. Which nozzle insert you use depends on your setup.
