Red Line 75W-85 GL-5 is a fully synthetic polyol ester differential oil in a lighter grade, sold for years as LightWeight Gear Oil. It exceeds API GL-5 and carries the extreme-pressure additives a hypoid ring and pinion needs, with the thinner viscosity chosen for efficiency in axles and final drives that are not asked to run as hot as a 90-weight application.
It also contains additional friction modifier for clutch-type limited-slip differentials, although Red Line notes most limited-slip units need no extra modifier on top. Beyond its own 75W-85 grade it satisfies the viscosity requirements of SAE 75W-80, 75W, 80W and 85W gear oil, and of SAE 30 and 10W-30 motor oil.
Features:
- API GL-5+ — the extreme-pressure category for hypoid differentials and final drives
- SAE 75W-85; 12 cSt at 100 °C, 68 cSt at 40 °C, viscosity index 171, pour point −45 °C (−49 °F)
- Fully synthetic polyol ester base with extreme-pressure additives
- Contains additional friction modifier for clutch-type limited-slip differentials
- Red Line's lighter, fuel-efficiency-oriented GL-5 — also covers SAE 75W-80, 75W, 80W and 85W gear oil and SAE 30 / 10W-30 motor oil viscosities
- Formerly sold by Red Line as LightWeight Gear Oil
- GL-5 extreme-pressure chemistry is what Red Line warns can be corrosive to the brass and bronze used in synchronizers — which is why GL-4 oils exist for manual gearboxes
- 1 US quart (946 mL)
Fitment: A differential, final-drive and transfer-case oil for units specified for a light GL-5. Red Line lists it as popular in many late-model BMW, Dodge, Ford, GM, Jeep, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, Ram and Toyota driveline units, and also in many Formula racing transaxles including the Hewland LD-200 and FTR sequential. Suitable for clutch-type limited-slip differentials. It meets the viscosity requirements of SAE 75W-80, 75W, 80W and 85W gear oil and of SAE 30 and 10W-30 motor oil.
Please note — this is NOT the same as MT-85: Red Line sells two different 75W-85 quarts. This one is the GL-5 differential oil; MT-85 is the GL-4 manual gearbox oil we also stock, and they are not interchangeable. Do not put this GL-5 oil in a synchronized manual gearbox — Red Line states it is not designed for most manual transmissions or transaxles with synchronizers, because its extreme slipperiness may cause shifting problems. Use a GL-4 oil such as Red Line MT-85, MTL or MT-90 there instead.
