Red Line 75W-90 GL-5 is Red Line's general-purpose differential oil, blended from polyol ester and PAO base stocks with a heavy charge of extreme-pressure additive. Red Line rates it API GL-5+ and calls it their most versatile gear oil for passenger cars, light trucks and racing, also covering applications that specify an 80W-90 or 90 GL-5.

A high viscosity index holds the oil film close to constant as the axle heats up, and the ester/PAO base plus friction modifier cuts sliding friction in hypoid gears, which Red Line says lowers operating temperature and improves differential efficiency. The friction modifier is already blended in, so clutch-type limited-slip units generally need no separate additive.

Features:

  • API GL-5+ — the extreme-pressure category for hypoid ring-and-pinion differentials
  • SAE 75W-90; 16.1 cSt at 100 °C, 108 cSt at 40 °C, viscosity index 161, pour point −45 °C (−49 °F)
  • Polyol ester and PAO synthetic base stocks
  • Friction modifier already blended in for clutch-type limited-slip differentials — no separate additive normally needed
  • Red Line lists API GL-5 and MT-1, MIL-L-2105E, SAE J2360 and Chrysler MS-9763
  • Also suitable where an 80W-90 or 90 GL-5 is specified
  • GL-5 extreme-pressure chemistry is what Red Line warns can be corrosive to the brass and bronze used in synchronizers — which is why GL-4 oils exist for manual gearboxes
  • 1 US quart (946 mL)

Fitment: A differential and final-drive oil, for hypoid ring-and-pinion units on the street and on track — conventional and clutch-type limited-slip alike. Red Line calls it the go-to gear oil for most differentials and the preferred choice for most racing applications, and lists it against API GL-5 and MT-1, MIL-L-2105E, SAE J2360 and Chrysler MS-9763 as well as differential part numbers from BMW, Ford, GM, Mercedes-Benz, Mazda, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Subaru and Toyota. Use it where the axle specifies a 75W-90, 80W-90 or 90 GL-5.

Please note: Do not put it in a synchronized manual gearbox. Red Line states this GL-5 oil is not for use in most manual transmissions with synchronizers, because its slipperiness may cause gear clash — a GL-4 oil such as Red Line MTL, MT-85 or MT-90 belongs there instead.
