Red Line Limited-Slip Friction Modifier is the friction modifier Red Line already blends into their gear oils, sold on its own in a 4 oz bottle. In a clutch-type limited-slip or Posi-traction differential it supplies the extra slipperiness that stops the stick-slip chatter you hear on tight, slow turns. Red Line's instruction is to add an ounce at a time until the chatter stops and no more, because too much slipperiness just produces wheel spin and costs traction.
It doubles as a break-in additive. Red Line states it reduces sliding friction in hypoid gears and can bring break-in temperatures down by as much as 50 °F, which helps protect the hardened surface of new gear teeth while they bed in. It is compatible with both petroleum and synthetic gear oils.
Features:
- Limited-slip differential friction modifier and break-in additive in one 4 fl oz (118 mL) bottle
- Dose by ear: add 1 oz at a time to a clutch-type limited-slip or Posi-traction unit until the chatter stops
- Red Line's rates — about 4% to cure chatter in a broken-in unit (roughly one bottle), 4% to 8% for breaking in a new differential
- A further 3% to 6% for non-limited-slip racing differentials and quick-change units running Red Line ShockProof gear oils
- Red Line states it can reduce break-in temperatures by as much as 50 °F
- Compatible with both petroleum and synthetic gear oils
- Red Line gear oils already contain this additive except the NS grades — pair it with 75W90NS or 75W140NS to tune a limited-slip exactly
- Red Line lists it against GM 1052358, Ford M2C118-A and 19B546-MA, Chrysler 4318060 and most imports
Fitment: An additive, not a standalone lubricant — it goes into the gear oil already in the differential. Intended for clutch-type limited-slip and Posi-traction differentials that chatter, for breaking in a new ring and pinion, and for non-limited-slip racing differentials and quick-change units running Red Line ShockProof gear oils. Compatible with petroleum and synthetic gear oils. Red Line lists it as meeting the performance requirements of GM 1052358, Ford M2C118-A and 19B546-MA, Chrysler 4318060 and most imports, and recommends pairing it with Red Line 75W90NS for the best traction, adding modifier until chatter disappears.
Please note: Do not pour the whole bottle in by reflex. Red Line warns that too much slipperiness causes excess wheel spin and reduces traction, and that their gear oils other than the NS grades already contain this additive — so a differential already running Red Line 75W-90, 75W-85 or 75W-140 usually needs none at all.
