Fits: Hyundai and Kia 1.6T and 2.0T turbo engines from 2015 onward with the 4-pin coil connector: all 2.0T N engines 2017–2024 (Veloster N, all i30 N variants, Elantra N, Kona N), Hyundai Veloster Turbo 2, Kia Forte GT, Hyundai Kona Turbo 1.6T, Hyundai Elantra Sport, Hyundai Elantra GT Sport and GT N Line, Hyundai Tucson Turbo 2018–2021, Kia Sportage Turbo 2018 onward, and more. Does not fit the first-generation Veloster Turbo (VT1) or other older Kia 1.6Ts (2-wire coils), or Smartstream engines: for Smartstream, see the LR3-SS High Performance Ignition Coil Pack for 1.6T Smartstream.

What this is

A high-performance, high-efficiency ignition coil developed in Canada by N75 Motorsports for the Hyundai N cars and the 1.6T/2.0T turbo platforms. Its spring makes full contact with the plug tip and the coil is low-resistance. It needs less voltage to fire the plug and gives a stronger spark and more efficient combustion than the OEM coils. Sold as a set of four coils, with a black or red top.

LR stands for low resistance; the 3 is how many revisions it took to get the performance and reliability we wanted. We rejected manufacturer samples until the spring issue described below was fixed, and we tested and developed the coils on three different vehicles.

As of 13 March 2025, 500+ owners in 10+ countries use LR3 coils, including many high-horsepower N builds. See the reviews on this page.

Why the spring matters

On a direct-fire coil, the spring inside the roughly 6-inch boot does the job of a traditional spark-plug wire: the coil sits on top of the valve cover, and the spring carries its output down the boot to the plug tip. Any added resistance there weakens the coil, whatever coil is used.

During development we found that the OEM coils leave a significant gap between the spring and the plug tip (a popular aftermarket coil we measured was shorter still), so the spark has to arc from the spring to the plug. LR3 springs sit flush with the boot: full contact with the plug tip, plus a small amount of pressure, which reduces the resistance between plug and coil. The coil itself is low-resistance, which also aids spark energy.

Hyundai, like most manufacturers, uses shorter springs and relies on the arc, for easy factory installation and easy plug inspection at service. At stock power that works; under high power, ignition break-up can happen, and that is where LR3 steps in.

What owners report

Owners report better idle, fuel efficiency, start-up and cold start; one owner reports more low-RPM torque. These are user claims; our own claim is less resistance, lower voltage to fire the plug and more efficient combustion.

Features

  • Excellent reliability and performance
  • Low-resistance springs from the coil to the plug, with better contact
  • Direct bolt-in replacement in the factory location
  • Red or black top
  • Full 3-year warranty to the original buyer
  • Exceeds OE specifications
  • Direct replacement for ES, VT2, VN, EGT N Line, Forte GT and EGTS
  • Seal altered to pressure-seal on top of the valve cover with the 10 mm bolt installed (the rubber does not wrap around the valve cover); fully watertight
  • Spring made 3 mm shorter on 13 July 2024 to aid installation

Options

  • Color: Black or Red Top.
  • Add NGK Spark Plugs: No, Heat Range 8 (my car is not tuned) or Heat Range 9 (my car is tuned); plugs you add ship with the coils.

Installation

  1. Line up the spring with the tip of the plug. You feel a small bounce when it is lined up.
  2. Push straight down on the coil top with your dominant hand, square to the valve cover, without letting the coil move side to side.
  3. Tighten the 10 mm bolt with your other hand while holding the coil down.

The boot seals on top of the valve cover rather than wrapping around it; the seal is watertight. Pushing the coil down at an angle can collapse the spring; a collapsed spring is not covered under warranty. If it happens, email sales@n75motorsports.ca. Installation takes care but is worth it.

Warranty

3-year warranty to the original buyer. Coils are a wear item, like spark plugs with a slightly longer service interval, and the 3-year warranty still applies. A spring collapsed by improper installation is not covered; email sales@n75motorsports.ca if it happens.

FAQ

Will these fit my Smartstream 1.6T?

No. For Smartstream engines, see the LR3-SS High Performance Ignition Coil Pack for 1.6T Smartstream.

Which spark plugs should I add?

Heat range 8 if your car is not tuned, heat range 9 if it is.

Do I need to replace all four?

LR3 is sold as a set of four coils.

What if I collapse a spring during installation?

It is not covered under the warranty. Email sales@n75motorsports.ca if it happens.

Definitely more solid when pushing higher mph. Super smooth idle compared to the stock coil packs. Havent put in the new plugs yet, though im sure the difference will be night and day. Very happy!

Definitely smoothed out rpms.

It's ensured spark has definitely kept the combustion process running strong and smooth even on the muggiest humid days where I often felt hesitation and the micro misfires before with the stock coil packs.

Nice OEM Replacement

I was replacing my spark plugs and decided to purchase these as a “future” upgrade for when I get a tune. On a stock engine with fresh plugs with no tune, these have helped a bit in low end toque especially off the line. I’ve also seen my average mileage (according to the display) tick up by maybe .2-.3 over a couple weeks. They don’t make a night and day difference by any means, but it’s a future proof upgrade and was an overall easy install. Only complaint I’d have is that the seal/boot on these is different to the factory coils and doesn’t seem as straightforward or user friendly. I found myself questioning if I had them over tightened due to the rubber seal getting crushed around the tunnel for the spark plug. A seal is a seal I suppose, I just wish there was better instruction and clarity on this one issue. I’m over 500 miles in to these and it’s been smooth so far. Will be doing plenty of business with N75 in the future!

Car feels new again

Shipping was super fast. Got to installing them today and runs so much smoother, more responsive and less vibration from the engine. But most important is that it fixed the misfire issue I’ve been having. I’d highly recommend this product and N75 any day

Almost perfect

Shipping was very fast once handed off to FedEx. I opted for the normal heat range 8, plugs but they were not gapped to .025 like the description says (on the listing/page for the spark plugs themselves), so I had to gap them myself. Post-install, everything is running great and I have no issues.

Hey Jason, You should not be using a dial gauge to gap plugs, they are well know to be wrong, use a feeler gauge (which is what we use) and you will get a more accurate reading. We suspect if you changed the gap they will be very off if checked with a feeler gauge.
